Ricky Gervais joked at this year’s Golden Globes that after his performance, he wouldn’t be invited back. He was wrong.
NBC, which airs the awards, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hands them out, announced Wednesday (April 28) that Gervais will have a return engagement as host of the Globes on Jan. 16, 2011. NBC will again air the awards live across the country.
“I can’t believe they invited me back after the awful things I said,” Gervais says, continuing the bit. “Let’s see how far I can go this time.”
“As viewers discovered with our last awards telecast, Ricky’s surprising and unpredictable humor is a great fit for the Globes,” says Paul Telegdy, NBC’s head of alternative programming. “He’s a true force of nature with a wicked sense of humor who always keeps everyone on their toes waiting for the unexpected.”
In January, that included lines like “Honestly, I like a drink as much as the next man … unless the next man is Mel Gibson,” by way of introducing Gibson.
January’s Gervais-hosted Globes had strong ratings, building by more than 2 million viewers over the 2009 awards.
