rising star west coast shameia crawford megan tibbits abc 'Rising Star' episode 2: West Coast vote saves Shameia Crawford and Megan Tibbits

“Rising Star” actually made its West Coast votes work in Sunday’s (June 29) episode 2. While the vast majority of the singers had their fates decided three hours before the western states got to see them, two performers — Shameia Crawford and Megan Tibbits — only made it through with West Coast votes added in.

Crawford’s performance of “We Are Young” by fun. got both criticism and support from the judges, while voting viewers landed at 69 percent. With just 1 percent needed to continue, only a little bit of help was needed. The West Coast provided it, and Crawford got to stay in the competition.

A similar situation arose later in the program with harpist Megan Tibbits. Her song, “All of Me,” got votes from Kesha and Brad Paisley, but she earned only 68 percent of the live-show vote. West Coast viewers put her over the edge and she is therefore coming back.

Are these votes totally legitimate? It’s hard to say, since both Crawford and Tibbits were within a couple percentage points of moving forward. Would the “Rising Star” producers manipulate the much-lauded audience voting in order to make the West Coast feel included?

Who knows? Either way, “Rising Star” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
