roger ebert oprah Roger Ebert speaks again on 'Oprah'Roger Ebert can’t speak anymore, but he hasn’t lost his voice.

The famous film critic — who hasn’t been able to speak since 2006 as a result of complications from thyroid cancer — appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Tuesday (March 2) to talk about movies, of course, but also about how he lives now. He still screens two to four movies a day, writes prolifically for the Chicago Sun-Times and his own site and tweets regularly about everything from pop culture to politics.

A crew from Winfrey’s show followed Ebert and his wife, Chaz, on a typical three-screening day — we should all be so lucky to have the man’s energy. The cameras also captured Ebert using a new computer program to bring his speaking voice back. A Scottish company has taken hours of his DVD commentaries and used them to synthesize his voice so that when he types into his laptop, something approximating the voice we all know from his years of “At the Movies” comes out.

But then I am not a lovely sight, and in a moment I thought, well, what the hell. It’s just as well it’s out there. That’s how I look, after all.” He said much the same on “Oprah” Tuesday. He’s now cancer-free and says he’s through with surgery: “I don’t want to go through that. This is the way I look and my life is happy and productive, so why have any more surgery?” Hard to argue with that.
