Ruler-On-Ice.jpgIt was the first time in six years that the Kentucky Derby winner (Animal Kingdom) and Preakness Stakes winner (Shackleford) faced off for the third leg of the Triple Crown races, but Ruler on Ice came out of nowhere to take the title at the 2011 Belmont Stakes, in a time of 2:30.88. This was the first time in the history of Belmont that the top 7 finishers from the Kentucky Derby ran the Belmont.

Ruler on Ice was a 24-1 shot, so some bettors somewhere are very happy indeed. Ice was followed by Stay Thirsty (16-1) in second, Brilliant Speed (10-1) in third and Nehro (9-2) in fourth place. Animal Kingdom had a disastrous start out of the gates, almost losing his jockey on the wet track, but he came roaring back and looked like he might challenge the leaders, but it was too little, too late for the Derby winner. Animal Kingdom finished 6th.

Meanwhile, Preakness winner Shackleford (6-1) finished 5th and Belmont favorite Master of Hounds (5-1) finished a disappointing 10th place. It marked the first time since 1996 that the Preakness winner was not the Belmont favorite.
