ryan gosling backstreet boys Ryan Gosling once might have been the sixth Backstreet Boy

Let’s take you back to a time long, long ago: Ryan Gosling was best known for his work on “The Mickey Mouse Club,” and also just so happened to be neighbors with a pre-fame A.J. McLean in Orlando, Fla. If things had gone just a little bit differently during that time period, Gosling might have ended up joining The Backstreet Boys.

“When I was doing ‘The Mickey Mouse Club,’ we were living in the same place as that guy A.J. from The Backstreet Boys. He was always talking about The Backstreet Boys, but they were just forming that band,” Gosling recalls to Celebuzz. “He was like saying how big they were going to be and he had a poster of them in his house and we were like, ‘Just shoot the ball, dude. That’s never going to happen. Never going to happen. Yeah right. Didn’t they already do that with New Kids? You’re a little late.’ Cut to: I was wrong.”

So does he regret missing his chance to jump on the BSB bandwagon? “That ship has sailed,” Gosling admits, much to our chagrin. “They’re not returning my calls. I don’t know what they’re doing. I try not to think about it.”

For his part, McLean seems to regret not forcing Gosling to be a member of The Backstreet Boys when he had the chance, even if the Baby Goose totally misjudged how famous the boy band would one day be.

“I want to say to Mr. Ryan Gosling I am so sorry I didn’t call you back dude,” McLean tells TMZ. “Dude, first of all, I don’t even have your number. I’ll see you at the gym — you know which gym, because we both work out at the same gym — when I see you at the gym, let’s finally exchange numbers. If we ever want a sixth Backstreet Boy I’m going to call you. Hee can sing. You can sing, dude. Ryan, you can sing.”

Someone out there: Please, please, please make this happen.
