ryan leaf cowboys Ryan Leaf arrested: Ex NFL quarterback busted for stealing prescription drugsOh, how the mighty fall.

Former NFL Quarterback Ryan Leaf, best known for playing for the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys between 1998 and 2002, was arrested Friday after a month-long investigation. He was busted in his hometown of Great Falls, Montana for breaking into the home of an acquaintance to steal prescription drugs, and subsequently charged with burglary, possession of a dangerous drug and theft. He was released on $76,000 bail.

The AP reports that Leaf likely broke into other homes over the past year and a half, and Central Montana Drug Force Commander Chris Hickman asks that any victims come forward.

Cops were tipped off to Leaf’s situation when postal workers notified them that he had been receiving suspicious, small, rattling packages once or twice a week.

Leaf’s struggle with prescription pain medication addiction is well-documented. In 2008, when he was a QB coach for West Texas A&M, he was accused of breaking into one of his players’ homes. An investigation revealed that he had obtained 1,000 pain pills from area pharmacies in just 8 months. He was put on 10 years probation.

Because of his history, when the packages began to arrive more frequently, police took action. Leaf was searched when he visited his probation officer, and 28 oxycodone pills — in a bottle with a label prescribed to a friend — were found in his golf bag. The friend told police that Leaf had entered his home uninvited, startled his housekeeper, and taken 15 oxycodone pills. It’s unknown as to where he obtained the other 13 pills, but officers are investigating the company from which he received the packages.

“I’ve made some mistakes, and have no excuses,” Leaf said in a statement.
“I am using the tools I’ve learned to move forward rather than
backwards, and will be open to talking about the details in the days to
come. I am confident that there will be further understanding when the
facts are revealed, and feel very blessed for all of the support,
especially from my friends and family.”
