The Girl You Wished You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party is about to get a whole lot more screen time on “Saturday Night Live.” Lorne Michaels revealed on Sunday (Sept. 15) that starting with the season premiere on Sept. 28, Seth Meyers will be joined at the “Weekend Update” desk by Cecily Strong.
“Cecily, from the first show, was right there,” Michaels tells the New York Times. “She exploded.”
Michaels plan was to have Strong co-anchor the “Update” desk with Meyers and then segue into a solo role later as Meyers departs to take over the “Late Night” show. However, if possible, Michaels would like to see Meyers stay on “Weekend Update” even after he moves to “Late Night” starting on Feb. 24.
“Seth is a unique case,” Michaels says. Since the new “Late Night” show would not have a Friday edition, Meyers could potentially drop in and work that day and Saturday on “Update.”
As for the whole left in the cast by departing “SNL” vets, new additions to the cast will include Brooks Wheelan, Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, John Milhiser, and Noël Wells.
