“She’s very excited about being a mom,” Joe Morton, Washington’s on-screen papa, tells People. “She’s sort of floating around having just been married and now having a baby and putting a family together. She’s in pig heaven, as they say.”
According to Morton, Washington’s begun bonding with her baby on the set of the fast-paced ABC drama as a way of making sure the trauma she puts her body through as Olivia Pope doesn’t make its way to the little bun in the oven.
“She spends a lot of time singing to it and talking to it to say we’re just playing pretend and everything’s going to be okay, so don’t worry about,” Morton admits.
“She’s a very smart woman, very kind, very affectionate and she wants this baby,” he adds,” which is the key to it all.”
As for how the notoriously private Washington managed to keep her pregnancy under wraps until she was ready to make the big reveal, Morton says she simply asked her co-stars to keep quiet. “We’re loyal to her and that’s what she wanted — she wanted to keep it private — and we thought, ‘Well, it’s her baby, let’s help her do that,'”” he says.
