What happens when you’re the Emmy-nominated star of one of TV’s most talked about shows and your own mother says another show is her favorite? Well, if you’re Kerry Washington, you get a good story out of it.
Appearing on the “Late Show with David Letterman” on Wednesday (Oct. 2), Washington admitted that her mom, a conservative, former professor of education, really freaks out of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” — not her daughter’s own “Scandal.” “My mom’s favorite show, other than ‘Scandal,’ of course, is ‘Game of Thrones,” Washington said. “She used to hang up on me if I called her when it was on.”
Washington told Letterman about taking her parents to the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards, where she was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama for her work as Olivia Pope, and at the HBO after party, her mom lost her cool around her favorite actor on the show, Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo in Season 1 of the cable hit.
“She completely fangirl-ed, clutched her heart and said, ‘Oh my god,’ andwas so over the top that I actually was like, I don’t know who you are right now,” Washington teased. “One person at the party asked if he was good on the show, and she said, ‘He doesn’t even have to talk. Just look at him.'”
Not only did Washington razz her mom a bit, but she also got in a good jab at Letterman when “Scandal,” and its subject matter, came up. Check out the very funny exchange below:
