Scott Foley is shooting the season finale of “Scandal” this week and hoping his character, Jake Ballard, sticks around.
“[Executive Producer] Shonda Rhimes and I are friends and I got to know her better when I did ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ a couple of seasons ago,” he tells Zap2it. “And when she said she was thinking about this character, I jumped in blindly. It is a show I am a fan of.”
Foley’s character, a career Navy officer, planted cameras in Olivia Pope’s (Kerry Washington) apartment. His actions and presence have not fared well with fans.
“I get a lot of heat and feedback on Twitter,” Foley says. “Anything that comes in between Olivia and Fitz” disturbs fans, he says of Pope’s relationship with President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn).
“And my character comes between them,” Foley says. “I am seen as the bad guy in a lot of their eyes but I don’t know how bad he is. I think he is following orders and I think he is just doing that.”
Following orders or not, Ballard can’t help but notice Pope.
“Maybe some personal feelings got in the way,” Foley says. “But who can blame him? She is gorgeous.”
Though Foley is starting a new comedy on FOX, “The Goodwin Games” he says he hopes his character’s arc continues on “Scandal” but true to Rhimes’ secrecy with her plots, she has not let him in on it.
“I think Shonda has tricks up her sleeves,” he says.
