miley cyrus selfie oxford word of the year 'Selfie' beats 'twerk' for Oxford word of the year: Is Miley Cyrus queen of both?“Selfie” has been declared the Oxford Dictionaries word of the year for 2013, edging out the dance term “twerk” that has been everywhere since Miley Cyrus2013 VMAs performance.

Other words in consideration for Word of the Year include “bedroom tax,” “binge-watch,” “bitoin,” “olinguito,” “schmeat,” “showrooming” and the aforementioned “twerk.”

Judy Pearsall, editorial director for Oxford Dictionaries, tells the AFP, “We can see a phenomenal upward trend in the use of ‘selfie’ in 2013, and this helped to cement its selection as word of the year.”

The research says that the use of “selfie” has increased 17,000 percent over this time a year ago, though the origin of “selfie” can be traced back to September 2002, when it was used in an Australian online forum post. It also started appearing on Flickr as a hastag as early as 2004.

As for “twerk,” that term dates back to the early 1990s hip-hop music scene, but its “association with Miley Cyrus this summer created a huge spike in usage in the media,” says Oxford Dictionaries.

“Selfie” isn’t actually in the Oxford English Dictionary yet, but the multi-volume reference is considering its inclusion. Which celebs would you nominate to be the “selfie” next to the definition?

According to this infographic, Miley Cyrus is the queen of selfies, which is kind of funny since right now, she’s also the queen of twerking. But as of September 2013, the top 3 selfie-posters are Miley at 121 selfies, Tyra Banks at 62 and Kendall Jenner at 35.
