Choosing to brave the crowds at a mall on Black Friday is a big decision, but at least you’ll be rewarded for surviving the day with a ton of savings. And if you were a patron at the Mall of America in Minnesota on Black Friday this year, you were rewarded with actual cold, hard cash.

Thanks to a not-so-secret santa, Serge Vorobyov of Apple Valley, MN, shoppers in the rotunda at the Mall of America were surprised to see dollar bills raining from the third floor. Vorobyov was making it snow at the same time that a choir was singing, “Let It Snow,” and he ended up throwing “his last $1,000” in singles down on overjoyed shoppers. Unfortunately, his act of “holiday cheer” ended up getting him arrested, as he was cited for disorderly conduct and released. He was also ordered not to return to the mall for a year.

Vorobyov took to YouTube to explain the reasoning behind his Black Friday stunt.

“I wanted to do some sort of pay it forward kind of thing,” Vorobyov says in the video after explaining that 2013 had been particularly rough on him. He wanted to spread some positivity after going through a “horrible divorce” and losing his car hauling business. He even invited his estranged wife to watch his act of kindness, but she rejected his offer.

“I don’t see how holiday cheer is disorderly conduct,” Vorobyov says.

All of the bills were stamped with his YouTube address and on his Facebook page he called the event a publicity stunt. When The AP asked why he wanted the publicity, he said he just wanted his wife to give him back his cat.
