NBC has officially announced that “Saturday Night Live” head writer Seth Meyers has been tasked to take over the “Late Night” franchise once current host Jimmy Fallon moves to “The Tonight Show.” With “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels also the EP on “Late Night,” Meyers had been seen as a shoo-in for the position.

“We think Seth is one of the brightest,  most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation,” says NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. “His years at ‘SNL’s Weekend Update desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the ‘Late Night’ franchise.”

“I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car,” Meyers jokes. “12:30 on NBC has long been incredible real estate.  I hope I can do it justice.”

The premiere date for “Late Night with Seth Meyers” has not yet been announced. Michaels will remain as executive producer, with Michael Shoemaker acting as producer.

Do you think Meyers is a good choice?
