FX has picked up a new comedy series from Denis Leary about an aging would-be rock star and his last stab at stardom.
The appropriately titled “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” stars Leary (who also wrote the pilot and is executive producing). John Corbett, Elizabeth Gillies, Elaine Hendrix and Bobby Kelly also star.
“I am extremely elated at the opportunity to once again be working with John Landgraf and the fine executive talent over at FX,” Leary says. “They have a great platform for comedy, an award-winning marketing team and an amazing new Nespresso machine in the conference room. … Also, doing this show with FX will allow me to live one of my last show-business dreams: Emmy winner Peter Tolan [Leary’s ‘Rescue Me’ co-creator] will be playing my gay stepdad. I know what you’re thinking — isn’t Peter just a few years older than Denis? In fact, we are the same exact age. I’m just prettier.”
In “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll,” Leary plays Johnny Rock, who in the early ’90s was on the cusp of success with his band The Heathens — until his drug habit and penchant for sleeping with his bandmates’ significant others destroyed the group on the eve of their only album’s release. Two decades later, he takes one more shot at the big time.
The show will feature original music and guest appearances by “actual rock stars.” It’s set to premiere in 2015.
