president obama shakira getty Shakira chosen by President Obama for advisory commission on Hispanic educationPresident Obama announced Wednesday (Oct. 5) that pop star Shakira has been named to the Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, citing her work helping children in Latin America, reports the AFP.

Shakira founded the Barefoot Foundation, a US-based non-profit whose mission is to make education universally available to every child. Currently the Barefoot Foundation and its Colombian Counterpart, Pies Descalzos, support six schools in Colombia, which help more than 30,000 children and their family members who have been affected by population displacement.

Shakira has also joined the World Bank in 2010 to lobby for educational and developmental programs for children in Latin America.

There were four people named to the advisory commission: Shakira, Nancy Navarro of Maryland, Adrian Pedroza, an immigration and education campaigner, and educational expert Kent Scribner.

President Obama says in a statement, “I am grateful that these
impressive individuals have chosen to dedicate their talents to serving
the American people at this important time for our country. I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead.”
