shaun white snowboard Shaun White drops out of Slopestyle X Games competition thanks to sprained ankleTalk about a bummer: X Games star and Olympic gold medalist Shaun White has had to drop out of his latest snowboarding competition because of a sprained ankle.

According to ESPN, the athlete has dropped out of the Snowboard Slopestyle competition at the Winter X Games because of an injury. White was treated by medical staff on Thursday (Jan. 26) for aggravating a sprained ankle, but planned to compete in the Slopestyle competition on Friday. But after taking some practice runs in the morning, White decided his left ankle was too injured to compete.
White tells ESPN, “I’m disappointed. My priority this year was to ride in Slopestyle, and unfortunately I hit my ankle again riding the course in today’s practice. I’m going to rest up and get ready to ride Pipe on Sunday.”
Slopestyle is an event where the competitors try to perform the most difficult tricks they can while getting as high in the air as possible. It’ll be introduced as an Olympic sport at the 2014 winter games in Sochi, Russia.
The 16-time X Games medalist still plans to compete in the Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe on Sunday. He’s won the event every year since 2008.
