Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely one of the odder celebrities out there, so naturally the “Sherlock” star would take an unusual route of announcing his engagement to girlfriend Sophie Hunter.
Rather than tweeting a photo of the engagement ring or selling the news to the highest tabloid bidder, Cumberbatch’s parents simply took out an advertisement in the Forthcoming Marriages section of The Times like many proud parents do every day. How delightfully old-school.
The announcement reads: “Mr BT. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The
engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy
Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of
Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London.”
A rep for the actor confirms to the Mirror Online, “I am delighted to confirm this morning’s announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged.”
Hunter, 36, studied at both Oxford and the prestigious Jacques Lecoq school of theatre in Paris and now works as a theater director in London. Cumberbatch and Hunter met when they starred in short film “Burlesque Fairytales” together in 2010 (the trailer for which is below) but have only recently been seen out and about as a couple, most notably at this summer’s French Open tennis tournament.
