Sherman Hemsley died July 24, but he has yet to be laid to rest. And until a dispute over his will is resolved, his body, embalmed and refrigerated, will reportedly remain at an El Paso, Texas, funeral home.
The 74-year-old actor, who played George Jefferson on “The Jeffersons” and “All in the Family,” passed away at his El Paso home from lung cancer.
Hemsley was not married and had no children, but according to the Associated Press, he left his approximately $50,000 estate to his “beloved partner” Flora Enchinton.
But a man claiming to be Hemsley’s brother, Richard Thornton, is contesting the will, which he suggests the actor did not write.
According to Enchinton, Hemsley’s manager for over 20 years, the actor never mentioned any relatives.
“Some people come out of the woodwork,” she tells the AP. “They think Sherman, they think money.”
A court date has yet to be set for the case.
