sheryl crow and lance Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong: Ex fiance tells cyclist 'the truth will set you free'

Back in the early ’00s, Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstrong were one of the hottest couples around. Though they called off their engagement in 2006 after dating for three years, Armstrong won two of his Tour de France titles during their time together. Crow says now that she thinks he made the right move by coming clean about his doping.

“I think that honesty is always the best bet and that the truth will set you free,” Crow tells Entertainment Tonight. “To carry around a weight like that would be devastating in the long run.”

Crow says she caught “bits and pieces” of Armstrong’s interview with Oprah Winfrey where he confessed to using drugs to enhance his cycling performances. If Crow did, she likely noticed that she wasn’t mentioned at all during the lengthy conversation.

That’s not to say she’s not connected in some way, though. Celebuzz reports that Crow was named twice in affidavits submitted to the United States Anti Doping Association, which was the organization that brought Armstrong’s doping to light. She was reportedly in the room when Armstrong asked ex-teammate Frankie Andreu to convince his wife Betsy to lie on Armstrong’s behalf. Armstrong later dragged the Andreus’ names through the mud, and didn’t offer them any sort of apology during his Oprah interview.

“He owed it to me. You owed it me to Lance, and you dropped the ball,” Betsy recently told Anderson Cooper. “After what you’ve done to me, after what you’ve done to my family, and you couldn’t own up to it. And now we’re supposed to believe you? You have one chance at the truth, this is it. If he’s not going to tell the truth, if he can’t say, ‘Yes the hospital room happened,’ then how are we to believe everything else he’s saying?”
