Series creator and executive producer Simon Cowell said Saturday night (Feb. 11) that Houston was indeed one of the names he was considering.
Cowell phoned into “Piers Morgan Tonight” on CNN to discuss Houston’s life and said he was going to a meeting on Monday to discuss the second season of the FOX talent competition. “Of course, one of the names we were going to be talking about in that meeting as a possible mentor on the new series of ‘X Factor’ was going to be Whitney Houston,” he said.
Cowell says he was “absolutely devastated” by the news of Houston’s death. “She was … undoubtedly one of the greatest superstars of all time, one of the greatest voices in our lifetime we’re likely ever to hear,” he tells Morgan.
Houston was also “the benchmark” for many of the would-be recording artists Cowell has encountered over the years as a judge on “American Idol” and “The X Factor.’
“Ever since I’ve been doing this job … the No. 1 singer anyone would emulate if they really wanted to be a superstar, it was always Whitney,” he says.
