For their annual holiday campaign, Barneys New York, has taken the lead and transformed beloved Disney characters into — Gasp! — high-end fashion runway models.
Honestly, with a built-in joke like Skinny Minnie right there for the taking, it was bound to happen sooner or later.
When it launches on Wednesday, Nov. 14, the Electric Holiday campaign will feature a short film chronicling Minnie’s fantasy of being in the Paris fashion shows.Some of Disney’s finest will be sashaying around in designer duds to an original score from Michael Giacchino.
“When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion,” Barneys’ creative director Dennis Freedman tells WWD. “The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don’t change. I said, ‘If we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,’ and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models.”
While Skinny Minnie bares an uncomfortable resemblance to Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham and Goofy’s makeover does nothing to clarify once and for all that he is, in fact, a dog, Daisy Duck‘s Dolce & Gabbana look is actually worthy of a Pinterest board.
Yet to be revealed are Mickey Mouse, Cruella de Vil, Princess Tiana and Snow White‘s high fashion holiday looks.
