christian borle smash peter and the starcatcher 'Smash' star Christian Borle: Tony nominee relishes both Broadway gigsIn Christian Borle‘s case, art should imitate life.
As Tom, the composer of the Marilyn Monroe musical “Bombshell” on “Smash,” he can only hope to be nominated for a Tony Award.
In Borle’s other job, starring in Broadway’s “Peter and the Starcatcher” as Black Stache, the absolutely fabulous pirate who becomes Captain Hook in the Peter Pan story, Borle earned a Tony nomination Tuesday (May 1).
He doesn’t know if the same could be in store for his NBC character, or where the show will go. Though everyone expects changes with “Smash,” even the stars have not been let on in what those may be.
“This is an exciting place to be,” he tells Zap2it. “I can’t believe ‘Peter’ made it to Broadway and I have ‘Smash’ on the air Monday night and I walk into the theater Tuesday.”
Incidentally, despite that Borle has a lot of stage time in “Peter and the Starcatcher,” and all but walks away with the show, he was nominated in the featured role category, akin to supporting actor at the Oscars.
“I didn’t know the rule,” he says, regarding lead actor category. “You have to be over the title.”
“But there is something about the support of the show,” he says of the play’s ensemble, “that it didn’t seem right to be the lead.”
