kiernan shipka sofia the first oona disney junior disney 'Sofia the First: The Floating Palace': Kiernan Shipka's Oona is the new 'Little Mermaid' in the sea

Kiernan Shipka is cooler than you. Sorry, but it’s true. She may have just turned 14 on Nov. 10 (yes, “Mad Men’s” Sally is growing up quickly) but she’s a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, just finished filming Lifetime’s “Flowers in the Attic,” and has not one, but two, Instagram accounts. Not only that, but she’s about to be on what is probably the most popular show with the under-7-set on Disney Junior right now, “Sofia the First.”
She’s guest starring as the voice of Oona the mermaid on “Sofia the First: The Floating Palace,” a one-hour primetime special, premiering at 7 p.m. ET Sunday (Nov. 24) on Disney Channel, and airing again at 7 on Thanksgiving night on Disney Junior. Set your DVRs now, parents.
“My cousins are obsessed with ‘Sofia the First,’ so before I was even asked to do it, I knew the show. Being asked to be Oona was even more exciting because of that,” she tells Zap2it. Best cousin ever 2013.
Part of what makes “The Floating Palace” a little different from the usual episodes of the show is this time, adorable Sofia is transformed into a mermaid, and meets up with Oona. And because this is Disney after all, when someone says “mermaid,” you’re going to think “Ariel.” And yes, the show features a special appearance by Princess Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” voiced by Disney legend Jodi Benson
While Kiernan didn’t get a chance to work with Jodi Benson directly, she’s honored to be a fellow Disney mermaid with her now. “It’s just incredible to be featured with THE mermaid,” she says. “I mean, she’s THE mermaid! She’s a Disney Legend! So to be in the same episode is amazing.”
While it remains to be seen what adventures Oona has in store with Sofia, Kiernan would love to make a return appearance in the future.  “I love doing voice work [she’s a vet of voice work too, specifically as Jinora in “The Legend of Korra.” Told you, cooler than you.] It’s a lot of fun, and I’d love to play Oona again.”
We bet if her cousins have any say in the situation, she’ll be back in the sea soon.
