“Sons of Anarchy” had its PaleyFest Q&A panel Wednesday night (March 7), featuring creator Kurt Sutter and actors Katey Sagal, Tommy Flanagan, Theo Rossi, David Labrava and Dayton Callie.
Season 5 was the hot topic of conversation and while Sutter wouldn’t reveal too much, he did tease a few storylines.
“I’ve always wanted to play this idea of, and I didn’t want to leave it til the last season, but this idea of putting Jax at the head of that table and the ripple effect of that on the guys and the loyalties of it and where people land,” says Sutter.
“For me, the interesting dynamic to play out this season is seeing Jax at the head of that table and the struggle that he has of being king,” Sutter continues. “How do you, can you be the leader of an organized crime syndicate and not become Clay? And if you choose not to become Clay, are you doomed to the fate of John Teller?”
“The only thing I know we will definitely continue to play out from last season is we introduced, at least in name, the character of Damon Pope and Tig’s clusterf*** with accidentally killing his daughter, so that will be some of the adrenaline that gets Season 5 started and we’re figuring out where that all goes right now,” he finishes.
Another thing the panel moderator brings up is the Tig-Gemma relationship, which frankly – we have been waiting to see explored since they almost hooked up in Season 2. Sutter says of the relationship, “Tig has been the third wheel in that relationship for a lot of years and I just think there is that connection. I don’t know where that’s going to go.”
“I think she has a close connection with all these guys,” adds Katey Sagal. “Not that there’s a sexual connection … but it’s a physical world, they wear tight clothes, they’re on fast abikes, there’s a hot energy about it. So I think something like that happening makes perfect sense, that it would accidentally almost happen.”
Katey Sagal also jokes later on about Season 5, “I think Gemma should sit at the head of the table.”
“Sons of Anarchy” will return to FX in September 2012.
