sophia bush global green Sophia Bush speaks out in defense of marriage equalityWhile some celebs tend to avoid speaking out on political issues, “One Tree Hill” star Sophia Bush can always be counted on to use her voice, particularly when it comes to environmental or civil rights issues.

Bush, a longtime supporter of Global Green, hit their 9th Annual Pre-Oscar Party in Hollywood on Wednesday night and told E! that she believes that gay rights and marriage equality are an extension of the 1960s Civil Rights movement.

“When we’re talking about the ’60s, when my best friend couldn’t
drink out of the same water fountain as I can because his skin is a
different color than me…Now, you’re talking about a different best
friend of mine who can’t get married even though I could get married seven times in my life and he can’t do that because he is a different sexual orientation than me?! That’s absolutely a civil rights issue,” says Bush. “And anyone who says that it isn’t is misinformed.”

Like many of her peers, Bush feels that conservative politicians should turn their focus away from fighting marriage equality and gay couples seeking to adopt, and instead put some effort into more problematic issues plaguing our planet today.

“In a world that’s filled with famine and rape and murder, we’re going focus on a problem,
so people want to say, with two people loving one another, with two
people wanting to potentially adopt children who are otherwise homeless,
really?!” she fumes. “Shut your trap and talk about something that matters, please.”

There are six episodes of “One Tree Hill” remaining in its final season. Bush’s character, Brooke, is currently in danger after testifying against a murderer… who was subsequently released from prison. Bush is gearing up to shoot the comedy pilot “Partners” for CBS.
