southland season 4 tnt 'Southland,' 'Doctor Who' and 'Girls' earn Peabody AwardsWhether “Southland” gets another season on TNT is up in the air at the moment, but the drama series has at last received some awards recognition.

“Southland” is one of 39 honorees at the 72nd annual Peabody Awards, which honors excellence in broadcasting. The Peabody jury praises the show for its characters, “whose personalities have become more nuanced by the season,” and says the show is “as convincing as a cop drama gets.”

Per usual, the awards went to an eclectic mix of scripted series, documentaries and news programs. Other series earning Peabodys for 2013 are “Doctor Who” (“for evolving with technology and the times like nothing else in the known television universe”), “Louie,” “Switched at Birth” and “Girls.” HBO also won awards for its movie “Game Change” and “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” along with a couple of documentaries.

The “Robin’s Journey” series on “Good Morning America,” following anchor Robin Roberts‘ battle with a rare disease, was also honored for its campaign encouraging people to register for bone marrow donation. News honorees included WVIT-TV in Connecticut for its breaking coverage of the Newtown shootings, CNN for reports from inside Syria and ABC’s coverage of Hurricane Sandy.

“Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels earned a rare individual Peabody for being the “patron saint of satirical television comedy.”
