Andy Whitfield, the star of “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” on Starz, has been diagnosed with cancer.
Whitfield, 38, will begin treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma immediately. The cancer was discovered during a checkup and is in its early stages; because of that, his doctors say it’s “very treatable.”
“I’m receiving excellent care, and am feeling strong, positive and determined with an army of support behind me,” Whitfield says in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy,” Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht says. “His health, of course, is our primary concern. He has our complete support during this difficult time.”
Whitfield was about to begin production on the second season of “Spartacus”; the show will delay filming during his treatment.
The show’s first season concludes on April 16.
