regis kelly glaad Spirit Day 2011: Join Ellen DeGeneres, Adam Lambert and more in taking a stand against bullyingAre you wearing purple today?

Whether you’re sporting lilac, amethyst, mauve, violet, plum or any other shade, you’re joining millions of Americans today in supporting Spirit Day 2011, a GLAAD-backed event that encourages people to wear purple in support of LGBT youth and taking a stand against bullying.
Celebs like Cher, Ellen DeGeneres, Adam Lambert, Tyra Banks, and even stars from “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom” have pledged to wear their finest purple-hued clothing to support Spirit Day, a movement started in 2010 by a teenager named Brittany McMillan to honor LGBT lives lost to suicide. The color purple was chosen because it represents spirit on the rainbow flag.
You might’ve noticed Regis and Kelly, Tyra Banks and Wendy Williams, and the ladies of “The View” all wearing shades of purple on their talk shows this morning. They’re joined by countless Bravo stars, MTV stars, ABC stars, Fox stars — actually, stars from pretty much every network, including CNBC and Telemundo — who have pledged to support the October 20 Spirit Day celebration. Even corporations are getting in on the action — MTV and Los Angeles International Airport are going purple for the day, too.
“From Hollywood to corporate America to local grassroots advocates, Americans are taking a stand against bullying this Spirit Day and showing all LGBT teens that it’s okay to be who you are,” GLAAD president Mike Thompson says in a statement.

Want to show your support? Even if you forgot your best purple duds this morning, you can still participate by using the hashtag #SpiritDay on Twitter (now trending worldwide!), and visit GLAAD’s website for some handy widgets that will turn your Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr profile pictures purple for the day. There are also some Spirit Day apps you might want to check out for your smartphone of choice.
