Laurie McCarthy, the creator and executive producer of “Reign”, chose to focus on Mary Stuart because of the Scottish queen’s controversial history. What’s that you say? Royals? Scandal? Notoriety? Yes please!! “Reign” is ‘sexy’ history at its best.
If you’re not familiar with the premise, the show is set during Mary’s teenage years, as she arrives in the French Court betrothed to Prince Francis, and accompanied by her four bonny Scots lassies-in-waiting (you’ll like these girls, they’re lots of fun!) Meanwhile, Mary (Adelaide Kane) soon discovers that danger and intrigue are waiting for her behind practically every castle door in France. She’s up against it big time with Francis’s mother, Catherine. The young Scot also finds herself as the object of desire not just in Francis’s eyes, but also by his half-brother, the dark, brooding Bash (Uh-oh!) In fact, the Mary-Francis-Bash love triangle somewhat echoes that of Stefan, Elena, and Damon in The Vampire Diaries. You’ll probably have to choose sides in this one too. Team Francis or Team Bash – what’s it going to be? Oh and of course, “Reign” looks phenomenal. Just look at it! At times, the costumes (created by Meredith Markworth-Pollack) will have you thinking you’ve been transported to 16th century France!
