jj abrams cropped 'Star Trek' sequel gets a release date ... and Benicio Del Toro? Two pieces of news today about the long awaited “Star Trek” sequel, which writer/director J.J. Abrams will be shooting in 3-D. First of all, the film has a release date, finally. We’ll be seeing the further adventures of Spock, Kirk and friends on May 17th, 2013 according to Deadline.

Abrams couldn’t make the original release date June 29th, 2012 that Paramount had originally set because he was still working on “Super 8.” This news comes hot on the heels of the announcement that filming was set to begin in January.

But that’s not all. In an interview with MTV, Abrams said that, though we don’t yet know who will be the villain of the story, he has an actor in mind for some secret role. He’s hoping to get Benicio Del Toro to come on board.

“Well, we’re just in negotiations, we’re in discussions,” Abrams said. “It’s not even negotiations — just in discussion. But I would
love to work with him. I’ve wanted to work with him for years, and this
felt like a good opportunity.”

He wouldn’t say what role he has the Oscar-winning actor in mind for, but he did say,

“It’s too early to talk about what the role is, but he’s such an
amazing actor,” said Abrams. “He’s so versatile. He could sort of do
anything. Except play Uhura,” he joked. “I wouldn’t buy that.”

Okay kids, start speculating. Who should Del Toro play if Abrams gets him on board? What villain do you want to see? Khan Noonien Singh? A Klingon? Vote in the poll below.
