comic con star wars rebels panel 'Star Wars Rebels' at Comic Con 2014: A new villain, new weapons and more “Star Wars” fans, get ready to see a whole new chapter of the franchise with “Star Wars Rebels.”

The new animated series premieres in October, but the cast and showrunners were down in San Diego on Thursday (July 24) for a 2014 Comic-Con panel to get fans excited about the new stories and characters they’re about to see.

The first question on everyone’s minds was when this new series takes place. “There was a chapter before ‘[Star Wars: Episode IV A] New Hope’ that was somewhat unexplored,” executive producer Simon Kinberg says. “We wanted to create a show that was a precursor to the films. It’s pre-‘New Hope’ and it’s really the origin of the rebels. We also want to try some things that the movies haven’t done yet.”

That means new weapons, like a spinning, double-edged lightsaber that the audience got to see a sneak peek clip of. And it. Was. Awesome.

“We’re always looking for new ways to design weaponry,” executive producer Dave Filoni says. “And that includes new lightsabers.”

And a new villain. While the audience got to see the Inquisitor, the Empire’s Jedi hunter, wielding the new weapon, Filoni and Kinberg wouldn’t elaborate on who or what he is. But we can confirm, like the new lightsaber, he. Is. Awesome.

Kinberg reveals “Rebels” will be a more personal look at the people who were the start of the resistance. “This is the true origin story of the rebel alliance,” Kinberg says. “This is about people that aren’t a part of an alliance when the show starts. They’re just rebels, four and then five and then more trying to fight back and claw back a little bit of territory that the Empire has taken over. We know one day, maybe after their lifetimes, they will win. But this is the very early days of the resistance.”

Filoni adds,
“Things are really out of balance, favoring the dark side. But kids are still being born. Part of our story is a bit of that side of things that doesn’t have anything to do with Luke.”

“Star Wars Rebels” features the voices of Freddie Prinze, Jr., Vanessa Marshall, Steve Blum, Tiya Sircar and Taylor Gray and premieres in October on Disney XD.
