Chances are the trailer for the new Starz series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" will have you seeing red.
Cinephiles might blanch at the idea of re-imagining the story of the rebellious Roman slave-turned-gladiator that was previously told in Stanley Kubrick's classic 1960 film. But mostly, the red is splashed right there on screen.
The show's producers, who include Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert and Steven S. DeKnight, have promised from the start that their show wouldn't be for the faint of heart. So, yeah — not even in the same area code as the Kubrick version of the story. But there's nothing wrong with that. If the storytelling measures up to the visuals, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" could make for quite the rollicking ride when it debuts in January.
The show stars Andy Whitfield ("McLeod's Daughters") as the title character, John Hannah and Lucy Lawless as the owners of the gladiator camp where Spartacus hones his skills and Erin Cummings as the wife Spartacus longs to see again.
What say you? Are you up for this version of "Spartacus," or is it all just too much?
