Ladies and gentlemen, the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, has joined Twitter. And, thanks to the assistance of Stephen Colbert, Clinton has made his 140-character debut under the name @PrezBillyJeff.
Thank you, Stephen Colbert. Thank you.
The historic beginnings of Clinton’s Twitter account — which is, despite its silly name, an actual Twitter account that Bill Clinton can use — occurred when Colbert and Clinton met at the Clinton Global Initiative University. This annual gathering of students and youth organizations hosted a televised conversation between the comedy host and the career politician on Saturday (April 6). Viewers outside of the gathering got their chance to see the event on “The Colbert Report” on Monday (April 8).
Why is it @PrezBillyJeff? Well, the main reason seems to be simple availability. Every other account you might look for is gone — from @BillClinton to @PimpBillClinton to @W_Clinton. What’s a former President to do than accept the catchy moniker picked out by Colbert?
Clinton was an excellent sport about the whole thing. While the conversation was still going, he dictated his first ever tweet to the world:
“Just spent amazing time with Colbert! Is he sane? He is cool! #cgiu”
Alas, there hasn’t been too much activity on @PrezBillyJeff since then. Only one more tweet — apparently timed to coincide with the airing of “The Colbert Report” — has appeared:
“I’m Bill Clinton and I approve this tweet, because I wrote it, because, like I said, I’m Bill Clinton. #notColbertpretendingtobeme”
We don’t know if former President William Jefferson Clinton will keep up with @PrezBillyJeff, but at least the account is off to an excellent start.
