colbert getty small Stephen Colbert's 'Colbert Report' on hold for family emergency, sources sayOn Wednesday night, when viewers turned on Comedy Central expecting to settle in for a new episode of Stephen Colbert‘s fake news hour “The Colbert Report,” they were met with a surprising rerun. Audience members were turned away from the taping, told that the show was on hold due to “unforseen circumstances.”

Speculation ran rampant, particularly given the fact that “The Daily Show,” “The Colbert Report’s” companion series, was similarly put on hold as the result of a staff member’s death. Our readers speculated that the series may have been shut down for “political reasons.”

A source tells WSJ that the production halt is due to a Colbert family emergency. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the show will air repeat episodes
on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16,” Comedy Central
spokesman Steve Albani said in a statement. Word is that Colbert is tending to his ailing 91-year-old mother.

“The Colbert Report” has been suspended before, but just once, in a satirical response to John McCain suspending his campaign in 2007.
