Colbert’s sister, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, is running for Congress in South Carolina. Colbert-Busch is looking to fill the seat vacated by Senator Tim Scott.

She’s running against former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, who is a Republican. A Democratic official tells Buzzfeed that Colbert-Busch is the party’s best bet to beat Sanford — and the fact that she has a famous brother certainly doesn’t hurt.

“Her brother mentions her once on his show and, what, that’s a quarter of a million dollars right there,” says the source. Colbert was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people of 2012.

In fact, Colbert was able to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for what was, essentially, a fake PAC — called Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow — as his fans contributed to his faux political contributions. His endeavors raised awareness of Super PACs in general. Ultimately, he donated the nearly $800,000 dollars to  DonorsChoose (Hurricane) Sandy Relief Fund, Team Rubicon, Habitat for Humanity, and the Yellow Ribbon Fund, as well as two activist organizations focusing on reforming campaign finance.
