stephen colbert sister wins elizabeth colbert busch Stephen Colbert's sister wins Democratic primary; Elizabeth Colbert Busch will face Mark Sanford in general electionStephen Colbert doesn’t often break character from his satirical newsman and conservative pundit persona of “The Colbert Report” — but he’ll make an exception for his sister.

Elizabeth Colbert Busch, Stephen’s older sister, is a South Carolina businesswoman who is running for the vacant First Congressional District seat in South Carolina. She cleared the first hurdle Tuesday (March 19) when she won the Democratic primary.

Busch will face Republican Mark Sanford in the May 7 general election to fill the congressional seat left vacant when Tim Scott was appointed to the U.S. Senate.

Stephen tells CNN in an interview, “She’s my sister and I’m willing to, you know, break the jewel of my
own creation to try to do something for her. Like, I’m not worried about what it would do to me or my
show to try to help her as myself – not as my character, but to help her
as myself.”

“And, you know, if people think that’s not the right thing for me to
do, I don’t care. It’s my sister and I’m willing to help
her,” he adds.

Colbert Busch will face an uphill battle in the largely Republican district. During last year’s presidential election, while Mitt Romney beat President Barack Obama by 10 points statewide, he beat Obama by 18 points in this particular congressional district.
