Stephen Hawking believes Earth is doomed if humans don’t explore outer space more than they currently are. The professor and cosmologist gave a lecture at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine Institute where he made a case for humans to push forward in space travel.

“We must continue to go into space for humanity. We won’t survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet,” he said through a machine that converts his facial movements into speech.

The 71-year-old toured Cedars-Sinai’s stem cell laboratory, which is studying how to slow Lou Gehrig’s disease’s progression. Hawking was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s 50 years ago, and has lived longer than most others with the neurological disorder. That hasn’t stopped him from trying to understand the meaning of the universe, though.

“To understand the universe at the deepest level, we have to understand why is there something rather than nothing,” Hawking told those in attendance, via The Independent. “Why do we exist? Why this particular set of laws, and not some other? I believe the answers to all of these things is M-theory.”
