For the character of Ron Burgundy, Will Ferrell based his character on Mort Crim. For Brian Fantana, Paul Rudd went full Geraldo Rivera. But where did Steve Carell find the inspiration for his lovable “Anchorman” doofus Brick Tamland?

While promoting “Anchorman: The Legend Continues” on “Good Morning America,” Carell reveals who the people are that he used as his muses for Brick. Surprisingly enough, they’re his blood relatives.

“For the first one, I really thought about my kids — not that they are brain-drained — but that they are very innocent and naïve,” he says of his children: Elisabeth Anne, who was three at the time, and John, who was only a month old. “I thought, well that’s kind of cute and funny. Yeah, he just stands there and looks like an idiot.”

Now that his children are 12 and 9, respectively, they likely won’t be too happy to hear his unflattering comparison. But at least Carell didn’t go as far as to say that Kristen Wiig’s character is modeled after his own wife, Nancy Walls.

“It just goes to show that there’s someone for everybody, even Brick. There is a lady Brick out there,” Carell says of his onscreen wife.

“Anchorman: The Legend Continues” is in theaters now.
