FOX’s “Surviving Jack” has brought both Chrstopher Meloni and the early ’90s back to TV. The single-camera comedy finds Meloni as a no-nonsense dad, taking over as the main parental figure while his wife goes back to law school in 1991. Having two teenagers under his watch, along with a slew of friends, leads to quite a few funny situations.
There’s something to be said for the “Wonder Years” feel the show gives off, using music and imagery from the era to immediately transport viewers back to their younger early 90s selves. Is it enough to keep them tuning in again, though?
Trading on nostalgia to drive a show certainly hasn’t hurt ABC’s “The Goldbergs,” which is going strong during it’s first season and looking likely to get a second. Is the early ’90s generation ready to relive their teenage years, though? If so, it might be just about time for hypercolor to make a comeback.
