constance marie switched at birth premiere abc family 'Switched at Birth' Season 2 summer premiere recap: Regina returns home from rehabWhen “Switched at Birth” last aired in March, an off-the-wagon Regina (Constance Marie) was carted to rehab by Angelo (Gilles Marini), a necessary move, but one that shook up the Kennish-Vasquez compound’s balance. As the show returns on Monday (June 10) for its summer premiere, Regina returned home, as well — to a handful of changes.

Chief among them? In her absence, Daphne (Katie Leclerc) has taken to living in the Kennish house (because, you know, she needed someone to take care of her). The sight of Daphne living life with John (D.W. Moffett) and Kathryn (Lea Thompson) as if she was their daughter (even though she really is) shakes Regina, even thought she doesn’t have much ground to stand on.

While her relationship with Daphne is on the rocks, she’s able to do some bonding with Bay (Vanessa Marano) — after Bay blows up on her, that is. Bay lets her know that Regina hurt her when she didn’t even say goodbye before leaving for rehab. They talk it out and the episode ends with them both escaping the Kennish household, to hole up at Angelo’s apartment while he’s off searching for Lana and his baby.

It seems a little easy for Regina to have been able to check out of rehab early, but it’s nice to see the show not back away from the mess she made when she fell off the wagon. I was worried it would have been swept under the rug, but I forgot that this show rarely gives its characters the easy way out.

Spare Parts:

– Regina’s not the only homecoming. Ty (Blair Redford), Bay’s love interest from Season 1, has returned home from Afghanistan, allowing for the two to reconnect, although it doesn’t seem as if all is right with the young soldier. His fit of rage at the end of the episode doesn’t bode well.

– Bay and Daphne still aren’t getting along, after Bay learned of Daphne’s kiss with Noah in the winter finale. The anger comes to a head when both girls are tasked with working in John’s office for the summer — until Bay sabotages it and finds herself a job at a wacky Hawaiian-themed amusement park. Let’s hope the frost between these two thaws soon.

– Planning for Toby (Lucas Grabeel) and Nikki’s nuptials are underway, but it’s clear that Nikki and Kathryn don’t see eye-to-eye on much. It’s a recurring theme for the Kennishes to be reminded that not everyone likes to live as grand as they do (one the show is close to wearing out), but this holds hope for some interesting drama.

– Travis and Emmett (Sean Berdy) stayed away from the Kennish-Vasquez action for the most part this week, but their buddy comedy with the two girls attracted to sign language was a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to seeing this friendship grow.

Did you enjoy tonight’s summer premiere of “Switched at Birth”?
