The first single from the upcoming soundtrack to the highly anticipated “Hunger Games” is a collaboration between Taylor Swift and indie-folkers The Civil Wars. Their song, “Safe and Sound,” is an eerie, lonely promise of safety that sounds like a lie — because, in the case of “The Hunger Games,” it mostly is.
Though they introduced her performance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, the band and Swift don’t actually meet in the video. They do their work in a warm-looking room in front of a comfortable fire, while she walks, barefoot and ragged, through a chilly, barren forest.
When she finds an abandoned hut and picks up Katniss’ mockingjay pin, there’s a sense of tragedy appropriate for the haunting film. We appreciate the fact that the video invokes the feeling of the “Hunger Games” without being too literal — Swift-as-Katniss would not have been a good direction.
