grammy awards tca 2013 panel ll cool j cbs 'The 55th Annual Grammy Awards': Producers and host LL COOL J preview the 2013 show

Although it won’t air until Feb. 10, “The 55th Annual Grammy Awards” got a panel at the Television Critics Association winter press tour so that the host and producers could preview what’s coming for music’s biggest awards show.

On hand to offer a few tidbits were this year’s Grammy host, LL COOL J, Neil Portnow (the president and CEO of The Recording Academy), Ken Ehrlich (Grammy executive producer) and Jack Sussman (the executive vice president of specials, music and live events at CBS).

What do we know about the Grammys?

  • On the night prior to the actual award show telecast, CBS will air a behind-the-scenes documentary talking about Whitney Houston and the staging of the Grammys.
  • Among the artists performing on the awards show, we will see Rihanna, Mumford & Sons and Fun.
  • The producers wouldn’t comment on whether or not there would be performances by up-and-coming stars (like Ricky Martin back in the day) or by alternative-genre artists.
  • LL COOL J on last year’s prayer-opening in honor of Whitney Houston: “The difficult balance that we had to strike was giving all of these artists — all of these amazing artists — their just due on that day. They were scheduled to perform. They needed to have a great night, but at the same time, we wanted the show to pay homage to Whitney and what she’s contributed to us. So that was the fine line.”
  • A reporter asked if the Rolling Stones might be on this year’s Grammy broadcast, producer Ken Ehrlich did not give a definite answer one way or another: “We have reached out to the Rolling Stones. I have no response to that question.”
  • Currently, there are approximately 11,500 voting members of The Recording Academy. That’s who you can blame if you don’t like the nominations.
  • LL COOL J wasn’t just chosen because he stars on a CBS show (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), although that was a factor. “I think it had something to do with it,” Jack Sussman said, adding: “He has amazing music cred, street cred. Artists want to be with him.”

“The 55th Annual Grammy Awards” airs on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 8pm on CBS.
