“The Americans” will return for Season 2 on FX in February, and the cable network has released the first promo videos for the Emmy-nominated spy drama. Based on the limited footage — which focuses on Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys as Elizabeth and Philip Jennings — things are looking cold for the Soviet spies this winter.
The first of the two videos finds Philip and Elizabeth in a closet, mostly concealed by darkness and clothes. A disembodied voice speaks on a phone outside of their hiding place, insisting that he didn’t tell “them” anything. By the looks of Philip’s silenced gun, that emotional statement may not be enough to save whoever is on the line.
Another video gives a bit of a glimpse into the double life of the Jennings family in “The Americans.” As soon as young Paige and Henry clear their plates, the parents engage in a tense game of Russian roulette.
Interestingly, the tension — along with the growing chance of death — only eases when Philip and Elizabeth’s hands come together at the center of the table. Does this hint that the only way out for this spy couple is together?
They will likely need all the help they can get. Set in the early 1980s, “The Americans” focuses on deep-cover Soviet spies leading double lives suburban travel agents and the parents of two clueless children. Since the Season 1 finale featured near misses with both capture and death, it will be interesting to see what comes next when the show returns.
