the boondocks final season aaron mcgruder sony 'The Boondocks' returns for final season in April without creator Aaron McGruder“The Boondocks,” the edgy and award-winning animated series based on Aaron McGruder’s comic strip, is returning to Adult Swim on April 21 for a fourth and final season without one of its key components in place: McGruder himself.

A press release from Sony Pictures Television, which produces the series, notes that the new season “was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined.”

McGruder has yet to offer comment on why, exactly, he’s not involved, though his work on new Adult Swim live action comedy series “Black Jesus” is likely to blame. That said, it doesn’t seem McGruder is too pleased about his brainchild being in the hands of another.

On Sunday (March 16),  he claimed on Facebook that he’d lost control over “The Boondocks,” writing, “Just found out someone has hijacked ‘THE BOONDOCKS’ Facebook page. This was done without my permission and I have absolutely no control over the content being posted as of Friday, March 14.”

McGruder first launched his comic strip in 1996 before Universal Press began syndicating it in 1999. Cartoon Network optioned and launched the TV adaptation in 2005, with McGruder as head writer. The animated adaptation has been on hiatus since 2010.

Will you watch a McGruder-less “Boondocks”?
