kyra sedgwick the closer 320 'The Closer's' Kyra Sedgwick on its return: 'A big surprise, a big announcement'“The Closer” returns for the final five episodes of Season 6 on Monday night (Dec. 6). Star and recent Emmy winner Kyra Sedgwick tells Zap2it what viewers can look forward to, which includes her character Brenda continuing to explore her solitude.

“The unintentional theme of this year is the issue of her solitude, her aloneness,” says Sedgwick. “She continues to be alone in the decisons
that she makes and people continue to not agree with her. The whole
Chief issue resulted in her feeling very alone in the world. I
think that the loneliness was an unintentional theme of the year, but it really
has emerged as a theme.”

The Chief of Police issue was resolved before the hiatus, but it certainly isn’t going to be completely smooth sailing with Courtney B. Vance‘s Tommy Delk as the new chief, especially regarding the fate of Assistant Chief for Operations Will Pope (J.K. Simmons).

“We wouldn’t leave you hanging with that one,” laughs Sedgwick. “The issue that comes along in the final five is Pope going to lose his job, which he alludes to, and who is going to take over that job?”

As for Sedgwick’s character, Brenda Leigh will be facing her own set of challenges, both personal and professional.

“[Brenda] continues to be pushed around and people continue to project their dreams and aspirations on to her,” says Sedgwick. “That continues to be an issue for her. In the first episode (when the show returns), one of her colleagues gets attacked, so that puts her into attack mode.”

Viewers can also look forward to the return of Capt. Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell) and some kind of big announcement.

“Mary McDonnell comes back, so that’s great. And we’d like Dr. Terrence (Bob Clendenin)
to come back and they’ve got a big surprise, a big announcement,” teases Sedgwick. “There’s an episode where Sgt. Gabriel (Corey Reynolds) goes over my head, which is unusual.”

“The Closer” returns Monday, Dec. 6 at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.
