darkknightrises-catwoman-stealing-wb.jpgCatwoman has always been held in high regard among Batman fans. It is this that made Chris Nolan unsure about adding the character to the upcoming movie “The Dark Knight Rises.”

In an interview with Empire, the film’s director explains, “Catwoman is a very iconic figure in the Batman pantheon…I was nervous about how she would fit into our world. But Jonah [Jonathan Nolan, the film’s co-writer and Chris Nolan’s brother] was very much convinced that there would be a great way to do it and eventually turned me around.”

Nolan continues, “Once I got my head around the idea of looking at that character through the prism of our films, saying, ‘Who could that person be in real life?’ we figured it out. She’s a bit of a con-woman, something of a grifter. A hard-edged kind of criminal.”

Catwoman has had a bit of a mixed track record in Batman history. Michelle Pfeiffer famously played her in the 1992 movie “Batman Returns.” And, of course, Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt both performed as the feline character in the “Batman” TV series. She took a hit, however, when Halle Berry took her turn in the 2004 movie “Catwoman.” Despite a production budget of $100 million, the movie tanked, only making $82 million worldwide while earning numerous Razzies.

Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises” when it’s released on July 20.
