The action flick, which Stallone stars in, co-wrote and directed, scored an estimated $13.3 million at the box office Friday (Aug. 13), putting it on pace for a weekend take north of $30 million. That’s on the high side of what forecasters were predicting going into the weekend.
The polar opposite of “The Expendables,” “Eat Pray Love,” also had a respectable opening day on Friday. The Julia Roberts movie, based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-seller, took in $8.5 million, according to studio estimates. That means it should be on its way to a haul of $20 million-$25 million for the weekend.
This week’s other new release, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” didn’t fare quite as well. It earned $4.6 million on Friday to finish in fourth place, behind last week’s top movie “The Good Guys,” which earned $5.6 million.
“Inception” rounded out the top five with an estimated $3.4 million.
