HBO has released the first teaser for its new series “The Leftovers,” and what it lacks in scenes from the show it makes up for in impact.

The 45-second promo plays almost like one of those viral videos half your Facebook friends are always sharing, with a narrator discussing just how many people 2 percent of the world’s population is: Bigger than the population of the planet’s 10 biggest cities combined, would stretch around the equator six times, things like that. It’s about 140 million people, we’re told.

Then, the “and what happened next changed everything” moment and the premise of the show: Those people all disappear, leaving everyone else to wonder what the heck happened and try to press on with their lives.

“The Leftovers” is based on Tom Perrotta’s novel of the same title; he also co-wrote the script with “Lost” co-creator Damon Lindelof. The show is set three years after the Rapture-like event and follows the residents of a small New York suburb. The cast includes Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Liv Tyler and Christopher Eccleston.

The series premieres June 15 on HBO, following the “Game of Thrones” season finale.
