josh lieb tonight show starring jimmy fallon fair use 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' taps Josh Lieb as new producer; Zooey Deschanel sells projects to FOX, NBC“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” is still months away from premiering, and already, there’s a behind-the-scenes shakeup.

On Tuesday (Oct. 15), NBC announced that former “Daily Show” executive producer and showrunner Josh Lieb would be joining “Late Night” with host Jimmy Fallon as producer, before transitioning into the role on the new “Tonight Show,” as well. Lieb, who has been with the Comedy Central series since 2006, replaces veteran “Late Night” writer Amy Ozols, who had been announced in the job back in June.

Fallon’s iteration of “The Tonight Show” will premiere in February.

“New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel and her producing partner, Rivka Sophia Rossi, have sold two projects under their first-look deal with 20th Century Fox TV. “Freelancers,” sold to FOX, is written by Mickey Rapkin (whose non-fiction book “Pitch Perfect” spawned the hit film) and centers on a disgraced lawyer who gets fired from his corporate job and starts over a a shared office space with a group of wacky freelancers. “And Lies I Tell My Daughter,” sold to NBC, based on a property from Deschanel and Rossi’s website Hello Giggles, centers on an unconventional mom who learns that honesty isn’t always best with her new family. Jessica Walter is eyeing a return to TV Land. The “Arrested Development” alum has joined the cable network’s comedy pilot “Jennifer Falls,” starring Jaime Pressly.  The project centers on Pressly’s Jennifer, a career woman and mother who is forced to move back in with her own mother, with her daughter in tow, after losing her job. Walter will play Maggie, Jennifer’s mother, who is described as a charming, narcissistic psychotherapist with boundary issues. Walter previously starred in the network’s “Retired at 35.” [The Hollywood Reporter]

– TNT is heading into the kitchen. The cable net has announced the greenlighting of food competition program “On The Menu,” from uber-producer Mark Burnett. The show will bring something new to the cooking competition format by giving viewers the opportunity to taste the dishes the day after seeing them on air. Each of the 10 episodes ordered will center of a different American food business, with home cooks working alongside professional chefs to create the business’ next signature menu item. The winning dish will join the establishment’s menu the next day. TNT plans to launch the show next year.

– ABC Family is planning a “Teen Beach Movie” reunion. Garrett Clayton, who starred with Maia MItchell on the Disney Channel’s hit summer movie, has landed a recurring role on Mitchell’s series, “The Fosters.” He’ll portray Chase, a handsome and charming high school senior who recruits Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) to join the crew of the school play. Clayton will first pop up in the second episode of the winter season, which begins in January. [THR]
