nina dobrev elena parents 'The Vampire Diaries' finale scoop: What really happened to Elena's parents plus the trouble with MattEarly this season, “Vampire Diaries” producer Julie Plec told us that she’d only employ flashbacks if they helped to propel the modern day plot forward — so when we heard about the season finale flashbacks, we couldn’t help but wonder if some new information would be revealed about the car crash that killed Elena’s parents.

Don’t worry, fans. Plec promises that we’re not about to find out that Damon was somehow involved in the accident, or any other unpleasant twist. “The flashback in the finale is a nice, small little runner that goes through the entire episode as Elena is looking back on a part of her life when things were just more simple, at least from a supernatural level,” she says. “That’s going to lead a lot of people to think ‘Oh, they’re going to reveal something huge about the way that accident went down, and I will still say what I said three years ago. That was an accident, period, end of story, no supernatural influence.”

We will see their car go off the bridge — a sequence that required a little scuba diving for the already-trained Nina Dobrev, as you can see in the photo below — but before tragedy strikes, we’ll see a comfortable life that included both parents (played by Jason MacDonald and Erin Beute) and Aunt Jenna (yes, Sara Canning is back!).

Unlike previous flashbacks, this one isn’t going to offer a revelation about the vampire backstory. Plec explains, “This episode isn’t about peeling back a layer of the mythology onion. We actually will get a little flash of something else that happened during that time that we never really considered, and it’s more of an emotional thing than it is a suspense thing.”

If (like us) you’ve been hoping for a look into what life was like for Matt and Elena when they were dating, you’ll get that. Just don’t get your hopes up for some idyllic, Norman Rockwell high-school-sweethearts thing.

“Matt is one of the vestigial representatives of this life that was clean and simple for [Elena],” Plec says. “Their friendship dates back to when they were in the sandbox together. We get a nice little flash of what it was like when they were dating, and that they were themselves a troubled relationship. Even though she’s remembering a simpler time, her problems were actually just as complicated.”
